OWNER/EXECUTIVE CHEF

"I have always had a passion for food.  When I was six, a woman from Huger named Lily taught me how to make red rice.  That is a memory that will always remind me that food is love and meant to be shared"

Owner/Executive Chef JJ Kern is from the Old Village of Mount Pleasant.  He had his beginnings in the restaurant industry when his Mom, Susan, was working part time for Ronnie Boals who looked after the seven year old upstairs at R.B.'s.  He then started working for R.B.'s when he was 15.  At age 18, JJ left for Washington D.C. to pursue a degree in architecture which just didn't fit for this Charleston native. He returned home to Charleston where he helped open Bubba Gumps downtown to continue to fuel the passion he remembered from working in a kitchen.  From there he left to work for Sal Parco whom he worked with over the next six years at Sal's various restaurants including the Boulevard Dinner, Mustard Seed, and Long Point Grill.  The experience he gained working for Sal provided  a solid foundation from which to launch his own venture - Hucks Lowcountry Table.  JJ's long term goal for Hucks is to "give the islands a restaurant with a lasting impression on the community and a place for the community to come together."  He runs his restaurant with a sense of humility and says that the chance to offer someone an experience to grow or to learn is the opportunity you give yourself to stay humble and genuine. True to his humble objectives, he envisions his last venture as simple and satisfying. "When I am old and slow to move, my last venture will be a gourmet fish taco stand in the islands somewhere".
